Overpass in Leszno open to traffic

Overpass in Leszno open to traffic

Today, during a press briefing organised by PKP PLK S.A., an overpass in Wilkowicka Street was made available to the residents of Leszno, which will significantly improve communication between the districts of Wilkowice and Zatorze with the eastern part of the city. The road viaduct was constructed as part of the modernisation works of the E59 railway line between Czempiń and Leszno carried out by TORPOL S.A.

The construction of an overpass in Wilkowicka Street was an important element of the modernisation of the E59 railway line in the area of Leszno. This collision-free solution will replace the existing guarded railway crossing with dams, located at street level, which was often closed due to the conducted railway traffic, which caused serious difficulties in road traffic.

The newly built viaduct is a three-span structure which, together with the embankments, is almost 80 m long, 14 m wide and about 7.5 m high above the level of the tracks running underneath. There are two 8 m wide roadways and a 3 m wide one-sided pedestrian and bicycle track on the south side. Along with the construction of the building, a nearly 400-metre-long section of Wilkowicka Street was also reconstructed by placing the aforementioned path and additionally building a pedestrian pavement leading from Miła Street.

A major impediment in the execution of works on the overpass construction was the collisions with the underground infrastructure encountered during the execution, which required making appropriate changes in the design documentation, increasing the scope and time of the works. The design solutions proposed by TORPOL in agreement with the Orderer and the introduced implementation technology allowed the overpass to be put into operation earlier than expected.

TORPOL S.A., within the framework of the project “Works on the E59 railway line on the section Wrocław – Poznań, stage IV, section Lower Silesia – Czempiń border” – implemented under the EU financial instrument Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), carries out modernisation works on two contracts – the Czempiń – Leszno section and another one on the border of Lower Silesia – Leszno section, the total value of which amounts to approximately PLN 850 million excl. VAT.
