Line 216 is an electrified single-track line, which is the main railway connection between Olsztyn and Warsaw. The modernization of this line was carried out under the Operational Program Eastern Poland.

Under the modernization, more than 80 kilometers of railroad superstructure have been replaced together with the construction of drainage and replacement of 33 turnouts. In addition, the existing RTC devices have been adapted to the new track systems and the increased train speed. Also, 47 level crossings have been rebuilt, including 24 level crossings which gained a different category.

Along with the investment, the stations and stops of Zakrzów-Sarnowo, Kozłowo, Nidzica, Dobrzyń, Bujaki, Waplewo, Olsztynek, Gryźliny, Stawiguda, Gągławki, Bartąg have undergone a modernization. Moreover, a new passenger stop called Olsztyn Dajtki has been built in the area of the viaduct at Bławatna Street and one platform at Olsztyn Zachodni station have been modernized.

In effect, the speed of trains on this section has been increased to 120 km/h.
